 What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of healing based on the principle "let like cure like."  Homeopathic remedies strive to restore and maintain the harmonious balance necessary for good health, without adverse side-effects.  Homeopaths understand that in most (if not all) cases, a substance that produces certain symptoms in a healthy individual will cure those symptoms in a sick individual. Poison ivy, for example, causes rashes; homeopathic physicians therefore treat rashes with poison ivy; onions cause a watery discharge from the nose; onions, therefore, are an effective element in homeopathic remedies used to treat colds; coffee might cause insomnia if consumed at bedtime, yet a homepathic micro-dose encourages sleep.
Homeopathy, in other words, introduces micro-doses of various medicinal substances to stimulate the body to heal itself.
Unlike conventional medicine - which attempts to treat the disease by suppressing its symptoms, homeopathic remedies encourage the human body’s innate ability to heal itself.  In addition, homeopathic medications never work directly on the organs in question; rather, they stimulate the vital force, which is the energy in the body that is rebalanced, and therefore enable the body to regain and maintain optimal health.

Homeopathy was first discovered by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700's, when he discovered that a drug which produces symptoms in a healthy person will cure those symptoms in a sick person.  Hahnemann published his major work, the Organon der rationellen Heilkunst (Principles of Rational Medicine), in 1810. The book contains such fundamental homeopathic concepts as letting like cure like, understanding that medicines become more potent as they are diluted and shaken, and recognizing that only one remedy should be given at a time. Hahnemann practiced throughout Germany and later in Paris; respect for his insights grew as the power of the homeopathic approach grew more and more apparent.
Eventually, homeopathy came to the United States; the practice of homeopathy grew and high-quality, rigorous schools of homeopathic medicine began to open - both within traditional medical schools and as autonomous institutions of higher learning.

Developing homeopathic formulas

Before they’re accepted as effective homeopathic remedies, homeopathic drugs are tested and accepted as effective through a process called proving - during which various substances are administered to healthy people and their effects are then carefully observed. Remedies are diluted so that the patient receives the minimum effective dose - a procedure thought to maximize the benefits of the respective treatment while effectively avoiding harmful side effects.
Many homeopathic remedies contain substances that could conceivably be toxic or hazardous to in larger doses but are in fact therapeutic in the micro-doses at which they’re administered.

Homeopathic diagnosis and prevention

Most homeopaths take a wholistic approach to diagnosing, treating and preventing health problems:  they understand that many factors affect a person's health - including nutrition, lifestyle, levels of physical activity, degrees of stress, family and interpersonal relationships, medical history, living and working conditions, genetics and the environment. For every individual, any one single factor might be the most important one; homeopaths consider each patient individually.
As opposed to conventional, traditional or “western” medicine in the strictest sense, homeopathy focuses on the prevention and treatment of disease instead of just the treatment; it looks to causes rather than simply considering symptoms. In addition, the wisdom of alternative healing practices, such as acupuncture, herbs, meditation, hypnosis, careful dietary choices and relaxation therapies are taken into consideration and recommended in appropriate circumstances. Homeopaths strive at all times to reduce or avoid the prescription of conventional drugs and medications - which often come with adverse side-effects at great expense - when all natural, homeopathic treatments will be at least as effective.
Homeopaths also tend to encourage patients to establish good health habits, and emphasize the importance of a physical environment that is free of toxic exposure.

Unlike traditional medicine - which treats a condition by suppressing its symptoms - homeopathic remedies support and stimulate the body’s innate ability to restore its own vitality.  The object of extensive clinical studies (compiled in the homeopathic Materia Medica), carefully chosen homeopathic remedies have been proven to be effective and safe at a fraction of the cost of traditional medical treatment.  Homeopathy doesn’t try to treat a condition by suppressing symptoms; rather, they restore the harmonious balance that is the foundation of all mental and physical well-being.
